The latest PPF 7800 Index revealed a worsening in the aggregate funding position for the fourth consecutive month over September 2008.
As at the end of September 2008:
- The aggregate funding position of the schemes fell to a deficit of £80.3bn from a deficit of £36.7bn at the end of August 2008. The aggregate funding position of the schemes is worse than it was a year ago (there was a surplus of £75.1bn in September 2007).
Weaker equity markets led to a fall in the value of assets of approximately 7.8% over September. However, this was offset to some extent by increasing gilt yields, which reduced liabilities by approximately 2.9%. - For those schemes in deficit, the overall deficit increased to £113.5bn from £91.6bn at the end of August 2008.
- For those schemes in surplus, the overall surplus fell to £33.2bn from £54.9bn at the end of August 2008.
